Today I experienced an environment unlike my own in
Baltimore. We went to Simmons High School in Hollandale, Mississippi. It
was moving to see the differences between the school I attend and Simmons. I
know that I am incredibly fortunate and blessed to be where I am and to be
given all the opportunities I have. One thing that really struck me during my
visit was when we first entered the school. I peeked into the gym and saw
several students talking to several police officers. Later that day some of
those students were my tour guides. Out of curiosity I had asked them what happen.
One kid said that he didn't know why they were being questioned and that the
police just mess with them sometimes. Another kid thought it might have been
for the gang writing in the bathroom on the wall, "those are fake wannabes
anyway" he said. Coming from the small private school I come from
experiencing this was new to me but an eye opening experience that I
appreciated.
