Going to Simmons High School
located in the Mississippi Delta was interesting. The school didn't have much
and there supplies were pretty much torn up and old. They talked about how they
all live across the street, next door, or down the street from each other. They
talked and showed us around the building but they didn't really seem motivated
about what they were talking about or learning. Some of them said they skipped
class because they couldn't stand the class, but I think it was more that they
didn’t understand the class. They didn't have as much freedom of speech as we
do they said they do a lot of textbook work and most of the time they were
assigned pages.
Going there showed me how
grateful I am for my school and the way our school operates. It also taught me
that schools are still segregated. It taught me that more money needs to be put
towards schools down south. Just looking through the window of the bus riding
down the street I thought to myself… this a school?? When I saw the school it
looked like it was shut down. It made me think like wow the fight for equal
rights isn't over. There is no way any school should look run down when we have
malls as big as they are. Seeing the school makes me think where is the money
for education going and why some places receive less than others?

I am happy that you understand that you are blessed to get a good education and to attend a school you love. I think that you learned not to take education for granted.
