The future of history

"The best of American history is made up of people who experience a moment of revelation that inspires them to fight against injustice."
--Juan Williams (author of My Soul Looks Back in Wonder)

I found this quote in small print inside the Little Rock Central High School Museum. I found it interesting because we tend to think of history as a timeline of conflict, of social, political and economic strife. It is not very often that major events in history are recognized for their banality. Peace is usually the blank space between points on the historical timeline. In my mind, however, history is just as much about monumental change as it is about unrelenting struggle.

Some of the most admired historical figures in my mind such as Nelson Mandela and Malala Yousafzai are examples of a need for peace and justice without using tactics of violence to incite revolution.

If we could all invite the values of tolerance into our homes, our families and our hearts, the world would surely be a more peaceful place.

Many say that history has repeated itself time and time again and that it will always continue to do so. I believe in the deepest part of my soul that changing the outcome of the future is never impossible. With technology at our fingertips, knowledge in our minds and determination in our hearts, we have the ability to change history and create a new era of peace and prosperity for all.

It's optimistic, but hey, maybe the world needs dreamers.
