An addition to the list

“Only in the dark will you see the stars" ~ Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This trip has truly influenced my perspective and enhanced my knowledge of the Civil rights movement. Prior to the trip, I knew of the infamous leaders like MLK, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, and even Marcus Garvey and Ralph Abernathy. However, I never really knew of John Lewis, Andrew Young, Diane Nash, and so many more along with their roles. As we went from museums to museums, it seemed almost impossible to not see their names. I gained a new appreciation for these individuals and their sacrifice that I didn't even know was possible. Even watching the movie Selma, made me proud because I not only knew the stories of most of the characters; I had the privilege of meeting of few of the people.
The 50s and 60s were some of the worst times in American history regarding race relations. I know that America has yet to reach the Utopia status, but progress is a never-ending process. There will always be someone to better the community for generations to come... One day I hope to be added to the list of stars as we prevail through these dark times.
